The aim of this article is to promote a prosperous understanding of area calculations through a sequence of applets built with the GeoGebra software with the intention of presenting visual justifications. It is qualitative in nature and is characterized as field research through action research. The applets were developed according to a didactic sequence based on Zabala. To this end, 11 freshmen from the Mathematics degree course at the Federal University of Santa Maria took part in weekly meetings, with a view to this study. In four meetings, they worked on calculating the areas of polygons studied in primary school, and the students were very receptive. They all mentioned that the use of applets made it easy to justify the calculations needed to determine the areas of the proposed polygons, showing that behind the formulas there is always a sequence of deductions and mathematical reasoning.Downloads
